Doing Sports Ministry

MAI engages in sports ministry activities through soccer camps and clinics, international tours and team competition.

Camps/Clinics: Over 3000 youth participated in over 40 MAI soccer camps and clinics around the USA and internationally. Campers are taught technical skills, team competition, and good sportsmanship through a biblically-based curriculum.  Approximately 10% of youth who attend the camps make first time decisions for Christ. MAI soccer camps are

International Tours: MAI uses international soccer ministry tours to reach the lost of this world with the message of salvation. Each year, MAI leads six to 10 soccer tours, comprised of over 100 youth and adult players, around the world sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and competing against top amateur and professional clubs. The objectives of these tours are to share the gospel and to support local church growth and church planting efforts.

Team Competition: MAI owns three franchises of soccer teams that compete in the United Soccer League (USL) in the USA: Charlotte Eagles Second Division men’s professional team, Charlotte Lady Eagles W League women’s elite team and the Southern California Seahorses Premier Development League team.  The purpose of these teams is to both share the gospel with other team players as well as to train players using a sports ministry curriculum.  The Charlotte Eagles have consistently received the “Fair Play” awards of their league.

Soccer camps have been an integral part of MAI’s ministry since its beginning in 1983. Over 3300 youth attended 55 camps conducted in partnership with over 40 churches in the United States, Czech Republic and Ukraine during 2007.

Camp curriculum is developed each year following our 4 guiding pillars which are Evangelism, Church Partnership, Training Leaders and Excellence. Camp curriculum is developed each year with a theme that relates to both soccer and the Bible, such as "Glory Road" based on John 14:5-6 "I am the Way and the Truth and the Life". The camp coaches develop relationships with the kids during the training times and lead the Bible lesson times. On the fourth day of the camp, the children are presented with an opportunity to accept Christ as their savior. Over 360 attending the camps make first-time decisions for Christ in 2007!

The Charlotte Eagles partnered Camino del Rey, a Spanish-speaking church, and Que Pasa, a Spanish-language newspaper, to operate a camp for children from Spanish-speaking families. In addition, refugee children from Somalia, Vietnam, and other parts of the world were offered an opportunity to participate at a camp conducted at a local YMCA facility.

The Chicago Eagles Summer Academy partnered with two churches to host three camps in inner city areas of Chicago. The camp staff lived with host families in these inner city areas during the camp, increasing their opportunities to build relationships in the community. While some of the staff ran the soccer drills, others befriended many of the homeless men and women who stay in the parks where the camps take place.

In addition to camps, MAI staff are involved in various outreach activities in the community such as after-school clinics, refugee outreach, homeschool clinics and school assemblies. Currently the Seahorses are involved in several local ministries. These include three After School programs, the Seahorse Soccer Academy twice a week, the development of a Church Centered Sports Ministry with two churches and several consulting partnerships where we share Sports Ministry curriculum either in English or in Spanish.
